The Arts Insider: September

Check out Sarah's latest fabulous Arts Insider guide, with everything you needed to know in the world of art and design, crafts, films, books and more.  She knows her stuff so you'd be mad to miss it...

World Sweet World
A beautiful copy of World Sweet World landed on my desk this month and I'm glad it did! I'm a fan of the blog so I was pretty stoked to get the ‘magazine for makers and doers’ all to myself. Split into two parts, it has beautifully illustrated, step-by-step instructions for making cool stuff, followed by articles about inspiring people, places and things. The idea behind the mag is to give you a creative hit every few months for some inspiration. I loved the up-cycling and re-using themes, crafts and creative New Zealand people talking about their lives. For $8 a pop it’s very affordable and so worth it! You can get your very own subscription here.

How to Look at a Painting by Justin Paton

This classy new hardback edition of the critically acclaimed and award winning How to look at a painting by art writer and curator Justin Paton is so sexy you just have to get one for yourself. The book is so good, it even won the Montana New Zealand Book Award for Contemporary Culture in 2006. Whether you’re a keen art collector, a serious student or just visit a gallery occasionally, this brilliant exploration of paintings through the centuries and across the world will open your eyes to things you’ve never seen before!

DVD:
I'm Not There
This film is inspired, as the credits say "by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan". Bob Dylan's many lives and stories are created and relived through 6 different people and their adventures, interviews, marriage and infidelity. A stellar cast with the likes of Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere come together to showcase six different stories that embody different aspects of the musician’s life and work. With an Oscar nomination already for Cate Blanchett's brilliant performance, this DVD is one for the collection. Buy it here or click here to check out the trailor.

Celebrate the unique stories and secrets of Auckland and reflect on our city's natural, built and social history during the 2008 Auckland Heritage Festival. There are heaps of events on over September 20 – Oct 5 including the gorgeous photography exhibition, Snapshots of Parnell, 1978 by photographer Susanna Burton. The exhibition will be of a series of black and white images of Parnell Ms Burton took in her photo-journalistic style. The festival is part of our long-term campaign to protect heritage areas and buildings and to encourage Aucklanders to celebrate our city's heritage. Lets get involved!
