How to fight off the flu

No one wants to get bogged down the dreaded flu! But with weather this crazy (cold, wet and windy) it can be near impossible to avoid getting struck down with it! We’ve got some top tips to keep you fit and healthy this winter and fight off that icky, sickly feeling…

Keep your hands clean
Germs are generally spread from person to person – one person gets sick and passes it on… It’s not pretty and you don’t want to get sick because of someone else! The best way to prevent spreading germs is by upping your level of hygiene. Regularly wash your hands (a hand sanitizer such as Germ-X is great – you can take it wherever you go) and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. When washing your hands take extra care to ensure that the soap is getting in between your nails and all over your fingers, including your thumbs and be sure to dry them off thoroughly.

Eat well
A healthy diet will help keep you in tip top shape. Load up on immune enhancing foods such as fruit and veggies. Think garlic (add to all your meals), oranges and kiwifruit (full of vitamin C) and green tea (it’s a powerhouse of antioxidants). For more super foods click here.

Stock up on supplements
Take supplements for an extra boost to your immune system. Our favourites include
multivitamins with Vitamin C, Odourless Garlic, Zinc, Echinacea and Olive Leaf. All of these natural wonders work to help your bodily defences function properly – essential when it comes to fighting off any nasty bugs.

Get enough sleep
To make sure your body is in top condition be sure to get enough rest every night. Regular sleep is very important to your overall health and essential for a healthy and well functioning immune system. Studies have shown that a restful sleep is tied to the balance of a number of hormones, in particular cortisol and melatonin, which are required to
prevent illnesses such as the flu and even more long terms ones such as cancer.

Chill out
Too much stress will weaken your immune system, which means you’ll be more vulnerable to sickness! If you’re stressed, the last thing you need on your plate is too be sick! Regular exercise, sleep, a healthy diet, chill out time and smiling can all help you manage and reduce stress. For more tips on how to become stress free – click here!
