Romeo and Juliet: The Royal NZ Ballet’s production of the Shakespeare play is inspired by the look of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film. It is showing in Napier, Invercargill, Christchurch and Wellington through August. Click here for tickets.

Film Festival Canterbury: MIC Toi Rerehiko present the 2008 programme of the best New Zealand short films in Homegrown, now in its 12th year. This year’s selection is drawn from a particularly inspiring year of local short filmmaking. On at Rialto Canterbury for three Saturdays in a row.

4 August – 8 August
Spark08: The international arts/design/media festival celebrates its 10th Birthday over five days in Hamilton. Featuring a diverse guest list of speakers, exhibition openings, film screenings and networking events. There is free entrance to all presentations, while door sales apply for some ticketed events. Celebrate Survivors of Sexual Assault: Join two authors as they speak about overcoming Kim McGregor is launching her book Surviving and Moving On (originally published as Warriors of Truth) and Jan Jordan from Wellington has written Serial Survivors: Women's Narratives of Surviving Rape. Help celebrate two profoundly important New Zealand books for and about women survivors with wine and nibbles at 6pm at the Women’s Bookshop in Ponsonby. Entry is a gold coin donation.

ecostore FINZ Sustainable Fashion Seminar: A show encouraging the New Zealand fashion industry to embrace sustainable and organic business approaches. Case studies will be provided by fashion leaders Emily Drysdale and Laurie Foon - two award-winning Kiwi designers who have embraced the principles of sustainable fashion with positive outcomes. Improv Angels: A Totally Improvised Crime Fighting Adventure. After their comedy festival debut, the Improv Angels agency are “living dangerously” by making all their routine up on the spot. They ask if they can spontaneously solve the latest mysterious crime wave, lock away the super villain, save New Zealand and have meaningful friendships… with good hair. Mount Maunganui Festival of Squash: Mt Maunganui Sports Club event will feature some of the world's best players competing on a glass court at the Bayfair Shopping Centre. An open tournament will run along side the international event. Going from midday to 6pm each day, it is free to view and $30 to enter the open tournament.

Wellington Women’s Lifestyle Expo: More than 160 exhibitors will feature everything from jewellery and health products to business products and information, crafts, fitness and beauty products, food and wine sampling, homeware and more. Women in Film and Television Awards: The 2008 awards will be presented at SkyCity Theatre in Auckland’s CBD, at a party event for screen industry practitioners, friends, family, supporters and interested public.The evening will feature Matua Bubbly Hour, post-event wine and canapés party, film clips, music and dancing. Jennifer Ward Lealand will oversee the evening’s festivities and there’ll be an appearance by comedienne Justine Smith and some of her ukulele-playing musical friends. The gorgeous Ladyhawke plays San Francisco Bathhouse in Wellington on Wednesday August 13 and Kings Arms in Auckland on Thursday August 14 (tickets available from Under The Radar, Real Groovy, Fast & Loose and Cheese on Toast). Nkb Fine Art Gallery Opening: To celebrate the opening of the nkb gallery in Mt Eden Auckland, it will launch with two group shows. The first, Overture I, running from 14th August til the 9th September will proudly showcase the work of Mt Eden based artists; Peter Siddell, Peter Gibson-Smith, Damien Kurth, Russell Jackson, George Baloghy, Stanley Palmer, Sylvia Siddell, Belinda Wilson, Tracey Walker and sculptor Peter Lange. Semipermanent 2008: Returning to Auckland on, the inspirational design forum brings together some of the best creative talent from New Zealand and the world. Speakers include; U.S. film and TV title designer and director Danny Yount; Australian design, film and production collective Collider; New Zealand photographer Derek Henderson; and Canadian artist and illustrator Marian Bantjes. Also US graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister; from the UK, software developer, artist and digital whiz kid Toxi and brand specialists SEA Design; from Australia, graphic designers Design by Pidgeon and cult magazine Dumbo feather; and New Zealand graphic design duo The Wilderness. MTV Snow Jam: An all day party with Opshop, Donavon Frankenreiter, Cut Off Your Hands, The Grates and The Potbelleez. The main bands start up from 3.00pm Saturday 16 August at luxury resort Terrace Downs. This Ashburton festival with local artists playing back to back from 10am to midnight is free, so head along if you’re in the area.

20 August
Andrea Bocelli live: The world-renown opera star is hitting Vector Arena in his first time to NZ. Surprise duets throughout the show will also feature. A portion of each ticket sale will go to the Asia Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS. Tickets range from $150. Click here to purchase.

Red Bull Soundclash: Elemenop P and Opensouls battle it out to win the favour of the crowd. Who will be crowned the Red Bull Soundclash champion of the world? You be the judge. Timbaland live: This is the new date of the Timbaland's concert, postponed from Friday 18 July. Timbaland has produced music for Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, Rihanna, Madonna, Usher and more. His latest album Shock Value has gone double platinum in NZ, and the smash hit single "The Way I Are" was one of the biggest selling songs of 2007. Click here for tickets.

Kraftbomb: A new craft fair run by two young woman is starting up on August 31st. This is no craft show for nanas. City, Karla and the stall holders are all talented, quirky crafters who are part of the modern craft revolution. Look out for City’s cross stitch kits and cupcakes and Karla’s geekfreak plush toys and artworks. It will be held from 1-4pm and every last Sunday of the month after that at Grey Lynn Community Centre in Auckland. Click here to see their blog for more information.
