It’s final – you want to spread your wings and fly away out of little old New Zealand. But, where do you start?
Where do you go, how do you get there, what do you need? Eeek! Before you get too scared, read our ultimate OE checklist. We’ve come up with an easy, stress free step by step guide to sorting out your trip overseas!
1: Decide on a DestinationFirst things first, you need to figure out where you to want to go. Maybe you’d love a holiday full of adventure, skiing through snow capped mountains of Canada, or maybe you’d love to explore London and all its fab sights? It’s an excellent idea to make use of travel programs such as IEP who will help make the entire planning process so much easier for you! Click here to see where they can help send you! From here, figure out a budget – you’ll need to factor in flights, insurance (make sure you're covered; you don't want your OE wrecked by an unforeseen disaster) accommodation, and proof of funds(ranging from $2,500 to $4,000; depending on your country of choice). Proof of funds is set up by the government of the country you’re going to so they know you are able to pay the first months rent, groceries and are basically able to set your life up overseas as it can take a few weeks for your first pay check to come through. 2: DetailsMake sure you have a valid passport and check the visa requirements for the country you want to visit. There’s nothing worse then booking an OE only to find that you can’t actually go, so make sure you do this with plenty of time to spare. The good news is, if you’re signed up with a working holiday programme such as IEP, they will help to make sure the tricky Visa application process is completed as smoothly as possible for you and will even submit it on your behalf! 3: Book it!Now that you can actually go, book your tickets! Have a good look around the web to find some super hot deals. If you decide to travel through IEP, they can set you up with discounted flights through STA Travel! Whether you want to go to Vancouver, Paris, London, or Dublin, IEP can get you to a bunch of fabulous and exciting destinations around the world at an ultra sweet price! 4: Suss a job The best way to make sure that you’re totally secure on your OE is with a guaranteed job. Unless you’ve got some contacts overseas already, it can be a little tricky to line work up before hand, which is why IEP is a fab option. They provide awesome services such as the Work Canada Job Fair (click here to find out more), in which they bring some of the best employers over to meet and potentially hire you on the spot! There’s no dodgy dealings, so you know that when you get to your destination you've got a totally legit and secure job and staff accommodation. 5: You’ve landed… Now what? Make sure you’ve thought about those extra little things, such as how you’re going to get picked up from the airport. On an IEP program that’s all included and part of the service so you don’t have to rely on friends or family already there, or do the organising yourself. Lonely Planet guides are an excellent way of learning all the in’s and out’s of your destination before you arrive. They give fab tips on the basic, but ultra important local do’s and don’ts. IEP know this, and that’s why they’ll give you your very own Lonely Planet guidebook (it’s bound to become your bible!). 6: Everyday living Make sure you have those everyday living essentials covered. Things like setting up a bank account and tax numbers are easy to over look, but oh-so vital! If you are going it solo have a little google search to find out about your destination and their employment requirements. If you’re organising your OE through IEP they’ll help streamline the process so that you have a bank account and a tax number almost immediately, so you can get working! Once you .jpg) 've got all of this ticked off and covered, you're totally good to go. Then all you have to do is make sure you have fun!
